Niederlande (FIFA Gruppe E): Team-Analyse

Sitting on top of Group E for FIFA Football World Cup 2010 are the Dutch with a total of 24 points. A wham bam land slide win of all 8 matches played during the qualifiers made me think if they would be able to wait till the World Cup and might just pickup the trophy and run.

The only glory the Dutch have enjoyed in football is winning EURO 1988. In FIFA history they have made it only till the finals of Germany 1974 and Argentina 1978. The only other instance was France 1998 when they entered the final four. Currently at No 3 in the FIFA World Rankings the Oranje look in very good form. Germany 2006 saw the Dutch loosing in Round of 16 itself.

However looking at the friendly match played with USA on March 3rd did show some good points. With a rampage qualifier in which they didn’t loose a single match, what went wrong in the friendly match with the Americans? Let’s not forget that the Dutch were playing in their home turf, Amsterdam. Still I would buy football tickets wanting to watch this team play and its fan’s roar & cheer.

Furthermore, I would say that the defeat is more shameful considering, the top form players from the USA team were down with injuries. Oguchi Onyewu (midfielder & defender), Clint Dempsey (midfielder & defender) and Charlie Davies (striker) didn’t even play. This should have made it easier for the Dutch to win well. However they weren’t able to crack through the defense. Even Landon Donovan wasn’t exactly in good form.

Ironically, the Dutch will be playing the Danes as fellow group members. And that instantly reminds me of the football match played between the two teams in 1992 UEFA European Championships semi-final. Both teams hung on each other’s neck at 2-2. Penalties would decide the fate it was finally at the 86th minute that Denmark struck victory.

One of the biggest matches to be watched is between Netherlands and Cameroon at group stage in Cape Town on 24th June. The best bet in the Dutch team is their attack force held by Dirk Kyut (60 Caps, 14 goals), Arjen Robben (46 Caps, 11 goals) and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (30 Caps, 15 goals). These three players have rich experience playing for European premier football clubs.

With Joris Mathijsen and Giovanni van Bronckhorst holding defense and Mark van Bommel doubling as midfielder and defender, Coach Van Marwijk has a good team. And yet he needs to be careful before presenting the final team list ahead of FIFA World Cup 2010 in June.

With Denmark, Cameroon and Japan as group members who are preparing with “do or die” attitude, the group stage arena will sell tickets, but might be only for the last time for the Dutch.
